We have an impressive inventory of frozen buck semen, ranging from straws frozen in the very first years of artificial insemination in the early 1970s to Elite bucks from the 2020s. We’re not straw collectors – we actually use, and rely on, these wonderful old guys.
In the tank
At last count, we have about a hundred old gentlemen in our tank, all worth using and some pretty spectacular, and a few newer bucks we have greatly admired in real life.
We meticulously research every acquisition, digging through old VHS tapes, scans, photocopies, even half-tones and old portraits, to make sure we understand where each buck will best fit into our program and what we can expect from using him. Then we synch our girls, thaw a 20, 30, or even 50-year-old straw… and cross every finger hoping for a successful conception.
Semen availability
We generally do not sell our “old dead guys,” but we’re happy to help out youth and 4-H members whose programs might benefit from these high-quality bucks. We ask only that the youth owner have a well-researched plan for the breeding and that they can demonstrate to us how and where our old guys might fit in to their plans.
Also available for youth owners: we (very occasionally) will collect one of our own young bucks if we think he brings something new to the table, before he is wethered and grown out for the table. If we have extra that we know we won’t use, those straws are generally free or just a few dollars, and we’re happy to help with the breeding process.
