Our Marans contribute a ton of pigment and intensity to their own eggs and to the eggs of their offspring. Whether you’re looking for a gorgeous dark brown egg or the perfect speckled olive one, Marans pull their weight.
What are your breeding goals?
Selecting for the basket and the barnyard
Marans have richly pigmented dark brown eggs, producing gorgeous picks for your basket and crossing possibilities for your flock. We select for good egg color in our Marans, but we value vigor and hardiness equally. We never line-breed to enhance egg color at the cost of the chicken's healthy, productive life. Marans are intelligent, consistent layers, and in addition to selecting for rich color, we also breed for dark speckling and gorgeous texture.
The quintessential French hen
Marans originated in the region in France with the same name. As the chicken fancy developed in the 19th century, the identity of the breed was solidified as a dual-purpose bird who was a staple of the French barnyard. Egg color was refined as the breed worked toward recognition in French and British registries. Today, the Marans is known for superior egg production and stellar color, but it should be noted that the meat quality of Marans is also exceptional, even in older birds.
