We achieve a range of colors and shades in our dozens by raising a variety of breeds and selecting for egg color genetics when we make breeding decisions.
So, who’s in the coop?
Light brown / tan eggs
Australorps create a strong backbone for egg-color focused mixes. As a dual-purpose breed who excel at egg laying and producing an admirable chicken for the pot, they add size and weight as well as hardiness and feed conversion. We have found our Australorps to be intelligent and protective of their flock-mates.
Blue to blue/green eggs
Ameraucanas provide the blue egg genetics needed to create green and olive eggs in color-focused mixed breeds. True Ameraucanas are homozygous for blue egg laying, meaning they consistently pass along that gene to their offspring. As a delightful bonus, Ameraucanas and Ameraucana mixes have gloriously puffy cheeks and beards. They are mid-size and sleekly built with colorful feathering.
Brown, green, olive, cream, speckled eggs
Mixing different breeds is where the true creativity begins in your egg basket. By combining consistent shades produced by various breeds, mixes get the best of both worlds and go toward developing a unique color identity in each dozen. Our mixed breeds include Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, tinted layers and speckled layers.
Diversity and breed history
If you're passionate about chickens and eggs like we are, you know there's always room for something new and special for your coop and in your dozen. Our future poultry plans involve bringing in more purebred hens and introducing high-quality color focused mixed breeds. Working with other dedicated poultry producers builds our flock and our community, and we look forward to finding more of those special chickens very soon.
